Curriculum

Shamrock Hill provides a creative curriculum based on the National Early Years Learning Framework

The Early Years Learning Framework promotes play-based learning and recognizes the value of communication and language (including early literacy and numeracy) and social and emotional development.

The Framework has been designed for use by early childhood educators working in partnership with families, children’s first and most influential educators. The Early Years Learning Framework draws on conclusive, international evidence that Early Childhood is a vital period in Children’s Early Learning and development.

At Shamrock Hill we embrace the Early Years Learning Framework along with creating strong, nurturing relationships to promote all children’s learning from birth to school years.

Preschool Program

Our Preschool Program is based upon the National Curriculum: The Early Years Learning Framework.

The Preschool Program promotes independent learning using a variety of tools which allow for experimentation and observations to occur and re-occur. Teachers will encourage children to use language to describe and explain their ideas. Literacy is part of our everyday social and cultural practices and is embedded in everyday events.

We provide children with the skills to support processes such as critical thinking, meaning, making and creativity.

Other critical skills children require as they transition to formal schooling include independence, decision making, collaboration, questioning and resilience. Our Preschool Teachers provide opportunities for children to develop these skills on a daily basis.

Curriculum “Outside the Gate”

As a small community based early childhood centre located in a residential community we are passionate and dedicated to ensuring our children develop a strong sense of who they are and where they live. We believe children are valuable members of the community and as such need to be represented in the community. We achieve this through lots of excursions “outside the gate”.

Through excursions we make links to our local:

  • Community library
  • Shops
  • Sports field
  • Bush reserve (Brooklyn Park)

Teaching Practices

We have a commitment to employing University trained teachers to guide the program in each of the children’s rooms, ensuring we are reflecting current theory and best practice.

We as a professional team of educators embrace a holistic approach to teaching and learning where we pay close attention to the child’s physical, cognitive, personal, social, emotional and spiritual well-being.

We see learning as a social activity and highly value collaborative opportunities both here at the centre, within the broader community and in partnerships with families.
